Here is some of Mara's story ….
10 years ago on St. Patty's Day I underwent a massive, serious, and very scary surgery. On that day, my spine was fused with two titanium rods that go up and down almost my entire back. That was one HELL of a surgery. I was in bed for over two months healing, had to learn to walk again, and experienced EXCRUTIATING pain (not to mention the aftermath of two accidental overdoses of pain medication by fault of the hospital). Let's be honest… it fu*kin' sucked big time!
5 years almost to the date of the anniversary of my surgery, after feeling great for all this time and thinking all of the healing was over and done, the rods in my back tore one of the levels in my spine. I experienced agonizing pain mixed with extreme illness from the crazy insane quantities of pain killers I was put on – I'm talking over 15 pills a day. My hair even began to break off and fall out from all of the medication, and I remember sitting in my hair dresser's chair with tears streaming down my face as he had to cut most of it off. It was pretty serious and overwhelming stuff.
But most horrible and painful of all was how it affected my life: I couldn't walk, couldn't drive, and I certainty couldn't work…And it was in that moment that I knew I couldn't have a 9-5 job anymore — and I couldn't work for somebody else anymore — because I needed the freedom to take care of myself when I needed to.
