Are You All In?
Pay the price now or the cost in the future!!

For those of you working through the debt-destruction challenge, congratulations! We are nearing the end of our first month. We’ve had some inspiring stories posted on our Facebook wall and called in to our radio show.

People have been going all-out, finding unique ways to do the hard now and free up those few extra dollars – sometimes even hundreds of dollars – to knock down that debt.

But we have a new challenge coming up – the challenge of keeping it going. We are neither at the beginning nor the end. This is where things get tough because life happens, and things don’t always go as planned. To help keep you on task during the coming months, we are going to dig even deeper into the principle of financial hard/easy with Phase II: Price versus Cost.

You can invest now, paying the price …
or you can wait, do nothing, and pay the cost later.

Here is the one thing you want to keep foremost in your mind when faced with a difficult decision: the “hard” that comes later is not the same as the “hard” that comes now.

The hard that comes later is always worse,
& the cost is always more.

This is true in business and in life. This is true of the small personal decisions we make as well as the large ones. This is the difference between micro and macro economics, the difference between a poor and a rich life.

Make the hard invests upfront in the things that are important to you! These are all the things we have talked about including your physical health, time with loved ones, and getting clear about your finances. Do the hard now and pay the price first. You do have a choice.

  • YOUR HEALTH: make the commitment to pay the price of your time each week for physical exercise, so you will not have to pay the cost later of triple by-pass surgery, weeks in the hospital, and months of physical therapy.
  • YOUR RELATIONSHIPS: show up for dinner with your loved ones and listen to what’s on their minds, or pay the cost later of mistrust, miscommunication, and failed partnerships.
  • YOUR BUSINESS & FINANCES: manage your debt now by paying it down instead of waiting and paying the cost later in compounded interest, poor credit ratings, and sleepless nights filled with stress and worry.

They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The price up front might seem like a lot to pay now! I have experienced first-hand how hard it is to get up at dark:thirty and run those miles! But think about the numbers. Think about the health of your future. You’re going to pay one way or another.

And here’s the good news: once you develop the habit of hard/easy by paying the price now, the easy will start to come. There is a downward slope in your future! Here is what you have to look forward to:

Your Life is here, waiting for you to step up. You are the only person who knows whether or not you are fulfilled. You are also the only one who can do anything about it.

Every day you face important decisions.
Commit to paying the price now,
and you will not have to pay the cost later.

Learning to forge the discipline required to pay the price up-front can be uncomfortable at first. Exercising, visits with family, budgeting your expenses and using cash only, can all be uncomfortable at times. But ask yourself, what are the costs and consequences of not doing these things?

By not practicing hard/ easy, the hard in the end will be terrible. It might seem “hard” at first, but really the only thing more difficult than hard/easy is NOT practicing it!

In other words, the energy you spend being afraid and feeling bad about not doing what needs to be done always exceeds the reality of what it takes to just go and do it.

For those of you who have joined us for the 100 days of debt destruction, I applaud your efforts of hard/easy and I am so glad you have made it this far. This month, I challenge you to go one step further: pay the price now! Don’t give up because the hill is getting steeper. You are creating a new habit. Keep climbing with me, and soon, we’ll all be in the flow!
