“Fear-driven people constantly fight, desire-driven people constantly want, pride-driven people constantly manipulate, mission-driven people constantly learn and teach, love-driven people constantly serve and enlighten…it’s always your/my choice” -Steve D’Annunzio
When we start viewing life more like a school than a battlefield or chessboard, our lives, peace, and success improve dramatically.
In college you enroll in a degree or certificate program in your field of choice. You have to first complete a core curriculum of general studies before you can advance to your major classes. And within the core curriculum there are certain classes that require prerequisites before you can move forward. An example would be completing Lit 101 and 102 before you can move on to 200 and 300 level classes.
If you don’t pass a required course you have to take it again until you get the passing grade.
A mentor and dear friend Steve D’Annunzio shared the concept that life is no different than school. There are lessons we have to learn to move forward, and when we don’t learn the necessary information, we have to repeat the lesson over and over until we learn what we need to know to move forward.
Have you ever found yourself in the same bad position over and over again whether it be the same kind of relationship, the same money problems, the same job issues, or anything else that seems to be attracted to you?
Chances are that there is a lesson there that has not been learned that contains exactly what you need to know to move onto the next step of exactly what you want.
When you look at life this way there are no mistakes, only necessary valuable lessons. You can enjoy the times that are great and realize that when they are not you are in the midst of a pre-requisite needed to take you where you want to go.
The following 5 Rules of Life School are posted on my wall in the office as a reminder that even the bad is good:
- We live in a school called Life
- There are no mistakes, only valuable lessons
- A lesson will be repeated until it is learned
- Each time a lesson is repeated it becomes more painful
- The greatest lesson we can learn is choose Love over Fear
Beau, Brilliant words of wisdom! As a parenting coach, this is the philosophy I urge parents to adopt and instill in their children’s minds. Thank you for sharing this important message.
I completely agree with you Beau! One of my goals these days is to get the learning the first time around so that I don’t have to experience the more painful versions of the same lesson! Spent too much of the early part of my life repeating those cycles over and over. Thanks for the invaluable reminder.
An inspiring and motavatiing message. One that we should all post somewhere in our daily life so that we can reflect on these golden rules often.
Thank you for sharing this uplifting perspective on the ups and downs of life…. it causes me to want to learn my lessons the first time around, but even when they do come around again, to be thankful for another opportunity to “get it right”. You are very inspiring, Beau!
Nice reminder, Beau – thanks!
Denny, You are right. Imagine if more parents taught their kids this message early…
Interesting how life keeps giving you the same lessons before you finally get it. I have learned that often there is a whisper, and when you ignore the lesson, the universe gets a bit louder. If you still don’t get it then the universe will start screaming at you. Better to listen to the whisper and understand what the lesson is so you can learn it and move on to the next. Too many people stay stuck, complaining and not doing anything to change their circumstances, and then wonder….”why is this happening to me”?
Love the 5 Rules of Life School and will be making a copy for my office wall.

These are wise words that we should all heed and practice in our daily lives. I am happy you shared these with us. We need constant reminders that we learn everyday and should be grateful for this learning experience.
Great thoughts. It is easy to complain but difficult to change.
You’re right Penny! Roy, this concept changed my approach to everything…
Yes Sharon, being aware that there is a lesson to learn is key.
We are heading the right direction as long as we are learning.
