Nate Currin RichLife Story #17

 

 

A question I hear all the time is, “What should I do with my life?”

 

My answer and #1 Rule – You better do something that you love because if it doesn’t make your heart sing your chances of failing sky rocket.  Getting clear about what you want will put you ahead of most people . . .

 

But the real test comes in following through, in getting up every day

believing you can do it.

 

Six years ago, Nate Currin and I were having coffee. He was telling me about his graphic design work, and I was sharing my ideas, vision, and philosophy for RichLife Advisors.  As I was explaining the RichLife mission of helping others to have a healthy relationship with money and utilize their resources to live a fulfilled life, the life of their dreams, Nate began talking about music . . .

 

“It wasn’t really that I hated my job in marketing and design.”

 

“It was sitting in an office every day from 8-6, asking myself, is this going to be me for the rest of my life? It was going home every day and sitting up until midnight, writing stuff that could really influence people, stuff that I enjoyed. And I was wondering what opportunities I was missing to perfect this.”

 

It’s a huge leap to go from amateur to career musician. The competition is fierce and people aren’t shy about telling you what they don’t like. Nate looked at me and the smile dropped from his face.

 

“It's almost impossible for a guy to really make a living playing music."

 

 

Still, when he talked about song writing, his eyes lit up and I could tell we were dealing with his definition of a RichLife.  At that time, Nate was playing a few gigs here and there, but after our conversation, he decided to make it a goal to play a few more gigs a month, and if that worked out, maybe add a few more.  A few months down the road he came to another realization.

 

“There was that moment. I was under a lot of stress from work, and I was sitting in the doctor’s office having told him my situation and he looked at me and said, “Man, you’ve got to quit your job and play music!”

 

And it was in that moment I made the decision: It’s now or never.

I am going to do this.

 

In 2005 the Nate Currin Band became a core group. 2007 saw the release of “Another Late September” & “The Darkest Sea”. 2009’s EP “Songs for Magnolia” caught the attention of MTV and has been licensed for use in several of their TV shows. Reading this, you might think success came pretty easy. But most of us face just as many roadblocks and obstacles from the inside as we do from the outside.

 

Has there been a lot of criticism? You bet there has.

 

“When first started out, people would write stuff on line and people would send me links to it. Now I make a point of not reading that stuff. It comes with the territory. Along with all the positive feedback and reviews, you’re going to get the negative.

 

And I’ve learned it’s a moment of choice.

If you believe it’s true, then it can have power over you.

 

A lot of the inspiration for my music comes from relationships, friendships and faith. My faith plays a vital role in my song writing. It’s the times we question what we believe that I tend to write about. I lost a really close friend in a car accident, and her life and death inspired an album worth of music for me. Writing music and lyrics that people can identify with is what I really enjoy doing. Find the people that connect with what you do and that’s enough.”

 

The national release for Nate’s debut LP, “Goodnight California” happened January 25, 2011. He and his band continue to travel throughout the Southwest, Midwest, and even the West Coast. The official release show for “Goodbye California” drew one of the largest crowds that Hard Rock Café Atlanta has seen to date. Ask Nate if he has any regrets about becoming a full-time musician, he’ll tell you, “No. I’m really happy.”

 

 

You get good at something by doing it. A lot. Do what you love, and the good will follow.
